In a time where authenticity has taken a back seat to mass-appeal, it’s become harder than ever to distinguish the contenders from the pretenders. The obnoxious shine of one genre has gotten so annoyingly bright, that it’s overshadowed its main illuminators. There’s infinitely more bad than good out there, and for us, weaving our way through the bad has been like being that guy at a group dinner who has to split up everyone’s check—it’s hard but somebody’s got to do it.

Born and raised on a farm outside Quebec City, Canada, Kruise had a slightly different upbringing than you’d expect for someone whose biggest idol is DJ Screw. “I hated rap music at first,” he exclaims. “I was into death and black metal. You know, the hardest shit I could find.” As the story goes though, when he was 15 his cousin brought him home the chopped & screwed edition of Chapter 2: World Domination by Three 6 Mafia, and from that day on, it was trap or die. “I listened to that album so damn much, that at the time I thought [Three 6 Mafia’s] music was always chopped & screwed,” laughs Kruise. “As soon as I realized it wasn’t, I did some research on how to make chop & screw, and started listening to only that sound. I was slowing down every album I had by like 30% on this program Goldwave. I would burn them to CD’s and bump them in the cold Canadian winter in my car at night and smoke weed with my friends. That’s all we really had to do.” It took little time before Kruise was getting his hands on every DJ Screw mixtape to ever be released, and from there, he began producing and creating his own trapped-out mixes, which pay homage to the age-old technique but with a modern twist.
Talking to the man about the recent hype surrounding the sound he’s held close to his heart for years now, he’s surprisingly cool about it. “To be honest, I’m happy that it’s finally popping,” Kruise says. “Although I got to admit, the whole trap attitude and usage of the word is definitely funny to me. I see people on SoundCloud making all that new electro stuff with the word trap as the genre, but there is no actual trap in there. An 808 and a ‘Damn son, where’d you find this?’ sample is not really the point of trap music.”
